Another Strong Poll

This morning, Rasmussen Reports published a new poll on our race. In a general election matchup with Democrat Rory Reid, we're up by 18 points, while Jim Gibbons trails Reid by 8. We still have a lot of work to do, but this poll is great news.

According to the poll, in a general, it's Sandoval 53 - Rory Reid 35. In a matchup with Gibbons and Reid, it's Rory Reid 44 - Jim Gibbons 36. More numbers from the poll are here.

Nevada Reading Week

This afternoon, I was thrilled to have the opportunity to read to students at D.L. "Dusty" Dickens Elementary School in North Las Vegas as part of Nevada Reading Week. I enjoyed reading "Duck for President" and "Oh, the Places You'll Go" to the students -- especially on Dr. Seuss' birthday, which the students were celebrating with Dr. Seuss hats.

I was amazed by the thoughtful questions the students asked and their interest in learning about what it's like to be a lawyer and about running for Governor. Thank you very much to D.L. "Dusty" Dickens Elementary for hosting me today -- I had a great time!

Filing For Governor

This morning, joined by my wife Kathleen, I was privileged to file my declaration of candidacy for Governor at the Secretary of State's office in Carson City.

As I've said before, Nevada is facing a difficult future. Legislative leaders spent last week trying to solve a monumental fiscal crisis and more tough decisions will have to be made in the future. I believe that my experience provides me an excellent foundation to serve as Governor and I would be honored to have your support.

I know that together, we can get Nevada working again. As my campaign continues, I hope to see and hear from you on the trail. I'm looking forward to this journey.

New RJ Poll

Yesterday, the Las Vegas Review-Journal released a new poll on our race. In the primary race, we are ahead of Governor Gibbons by seven points. In a general election against Democrat Rory Reid, we're ahead 51 to 29.

I Will Not Raise Taxes

This weekend, Gibbons campaign co-chairman Ron Knecht admitted to the Reno Gazette-Journal that the Governor's proposal to reduce the number of deductions mining can take is a tax increase:

"'Well, I'm not going to quibble with you,' he [campaign co-chairman Ron Knecht] said when asked if Gibbons' mining plan amounted to a tax increase. 'But who else would even come close to fixing an $880 million shortfall with only $80 million in new taxes?'" (Reno Gazette-Journal, 02/21/10)

I've offered a plan to close the budget gap and do it without raising taxes -- six steps to save the state $540 million and a plan to lease state buildings. My original plan is here and information about leasing state buildings is here.

As the Legislature convenes tomorrow, I'm encouraged that pieces of my plan are being discussed.

Sean Hannity On Our Race

Thursday night, Sean Hannity talked about the new poll showing our campaign leading Rory Reid by nine points on his show. I know there's a lot of work ahead, but I appreciate the shout out!

"Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is tanking in the polls back home in Nevada and it looks like his popularity or lack thereof is rubbing off on his son Rory. Now the younger Reid is running for the Nevada governorship. And the latest poll show him trailing potential GOP challenger Brian Sandoval by nine points, 44-35 percent. Well, you know what they say, like father, like son. And it looks like this father-son team are going nowhere in November."

Brian Responds To The Administration's Proposed Tax Increase

In January, I proposed a plan that would save the state $540 million over the next year. When I learned the budget shortfall would be greater than that amount, I went to work to find a solution that would not include raising taxes.

Yesterday, Senate Minority Leader Bill Raggio proposed leasing state buildings, an idea he got from my campaign. While this is another tough decision, I believe the vast majority of Nevadans will think my idea is better than raising more than $100 million in new taxes, laying off thousands of teachers, and cutting vital programs for foster children, mental health patients, and senior citizens -- all of which the Governor is planning to do.

I have offered a responsible plan to save the state $540 million dollars and am now the only candidate to commit to closing the budget gap without raising taxes.

Great Mariposa Academy Tour

On Tuesday, I visited Mariposa Academy in Reno, where they teach students using a dual language format. I had the opportunity to tour the school, speak with the staff and read to a second grade class. The students were great and I thoroughly enjoyed my visit. Thank you for having me!

Last Night's Meet And Greet

Last night, I attended a Meet and Greet barbeque in Las Vegas with over 200 supporters. It was a great turnout -- I had the opportunity to speak with many supporters and answer questions about immigration and education. I appreciated the work of the numerous volunteers who helped to plan, set up and get the event going. The dinner the volunteers cooked was delicious!

Thank you to everyone who came out and those who hosted -- I'm looking forward to seeing you all again soon.

Reno Latino Lions Club

Brian On Immigration

One of the questions I'm asked out on the campaign trail is "do you support amnesty?" I do not support amnesty.

As a Federal Judge, I saw both sides of the immigration issue. It was my duty to sentence undocumented workers for their crimes, but it was also my honor to swear in new Americans and to see the smiles and pride on their faces as they completed the process of becoming a citizen.

We must be able to verify that those individuals who work in our country are here legally and are eligible for work. Businesses who knowingly hire illegal immigrants should be fined.

I believe that we must enforce our laws, secure our borders and respect the efforts of those who have become a citizen through the proper legal process.

The American Dream is alive and well, but it must be pursued legally.

Las Vegas Meet And Greet

Last night, the campaign held a Meet and Greet with volunteers and supporters at the Bootlegger Bistro in Las Vegas. We did a demonstration of some cutting edge technology we'll be using in our GOTV efforts and I'm excited to get it off the ground soon. I appreciated the opportunity to speak with and take questions from those who came. I had a great time!

Reno Mayor Bob Cashell Endorses Brian

Reno Mayor Bob Cashell endorsed my campaign for governor today:

"Brian Sandoval is a proven leader who understands the challenges facing Nevada and is prepared to make the tough decisions," Cashell said. "I am proud to endorse Brian for Governor."

I appreciate the confidence Mayor Cashell has shown in my campaign. Our state is facing a monumental fiscal crisis, but I firmly believe that together, we can get Nevada working again.

Cutting Nevada's Budget Deficit

Today, it is being reported that the Governor will call for a special session of the Legislature to solve Nevada's budget deficit when he gives his state of the state address on February 8th. The budget deficit released by the Economic Forum on Friday is obviously troubling news for all Nevadans. We must all band together to find solutions that will take Nevada on a path to recovery.

I urge the legislature and the Governor to utilize the plan I've put forward to make up our budget shortfall without raising taxes, mass layoffs or deficit spending.

I firmly believe in a bright future for Nevada and the strength and resolve of all Nevadans. Together, we can get Nevada working again.

Speaking To The Carson City Republican Women's Club

Yesterday, I spoke to the Carson City Republican Women's Club. I appreciated the opportunity to speak to the attendees about how we balance the budget without raising taxes, mass layoffs or deficit spending. We talked about an overreliance by states on federal funding (I believe we must look at the strings attached, and if there are too many strings, say no to the funds) and I restated my opposition to a corporate income tax (as Governor, I will not support a corporate income tax).
