Condolences To The Guinn Family

I am devastated to hear the news of Governor Guinn's death. I had the privilege of serving with Governor Guinn as his Attorney General and I was honored to have called him 'friend.' It appears that the focus is to continue to cut and cut jobs, this might be a good short time fix, however, the state's economy will not improve with fewer people contributing to it, education should be a non-negotiable investment, our future is at stake, and we already have a poor record of retaining and graduating students, at this point the future of education looks bleak, maybe it stime to look around us and see what others are doing, as an example, the State of New Mexico,they are similar to Nevada in population numbers and the majority of the population lives within few urban centers, they also have gambling and a state lottery that funds education, yes, they have state income tax, but they have been one of the least affected economies of this recession. Nevada is the 4th largest producer of gold in the world and it is broke! there is something wrong with that picture. The new governor of this state will need to make hard decisions that provide solutions for the future and not to just "band aid" the problems to get elected!

All of the plans don't mean a thing if the money is not there to support it. Education is our future, but with the drastic cuts already imposed and the impending deficit of THREE BILLION in the next legislative session, what is the plan to find the funds to pay for this education plan? Until the money is found to pay for it, it is just another piece of paper.

As someone who previously served on the Assembly Education Committee, and who hopes to serve on it once again; I look forward to helping implement the changes outlined in "Governor" Sandoval's education plan. Holding school administrations accountable will do much the same that holding students "accountable" will do; it will accomplish better results by raising the education performance bar. Nevada's lowest in the nation graduation rates are a clear indicator that we must seriously change the way Nevada has been conducting its educuational duties. The reforms outlined by Brian are a clear step in the right reform direction. I look forward to wholeheartedly supporting them in the 2011 Legislative Session.

My concern is that education plans mean nothing without immigration reform. I understand that they are two different topics, but I believe they go hand in hand. I've heard that about 20% of students in Nevada are here illegally. I believe that if they weren't in our schools, graduation rates would be significantly higher. I have friends that are teachers at the Elementary level that sometimes need to ask young children to translate for others in the classroom. How much "learning" time is wasted on things like this?

How are you going to raise the money for private school vouchers? And will they cover full tuition or just the per-student average public school allocation, which would be around $4,000. That won't pay for any private school I know of in Nevada. I have four kids and would love to send them to Sage Ridge, but somehow I don't see the state paying for it.

So the funding of education is "non-negotable". I have seen so many public officials and public employees who are not being productive,waste time and are there to collect a pay check. This rhetoric sounds divine, however if we disolved upper tier jobs would students even know a difference? I can not tell you the number of times I have heard stories of teachers not having any material or guidance to teach, and then listen to six figure administrative personel bloat the effectivness of their programs. Bottom line is we should bankrupt the school systems, reorganize and make them more efficent.

We need to start at the top of the Education system and get rid of the pork. When I went to school we had the principal, vice principal and the school secretary. We do not need the Board of Education unless they want to work on a volunteer basis. There are not any school figures that should be making six figures period.
